What is cover letter anyways? Before taking this business writing course, I had no idea what a cover letter was. I don’t know if it was just my high school, or if all high schools just leave cover letters out in favor of only teaching the resume. A cover letter is the preface to a resume. It is the hello that a person would normally insert in an email or real life. Rather than just sending a resume to a job prospect, the person applying writes a conversational letter that not only sums up their resume, but offers some sort of greeting and handshake to the job they are applying at. The main purpose of the cover letter is to be an introduction. Making a good impression in the cover letter makes the job prospect believe the applier is really interested in working.
In conclusion, don’t leave out the cover letter. It could easily be the changing moment that lands you the job.
